TREASURE_Towards Responsible Extraction of Submarine mineral Resources

Raw materials on earth are running out, while great opportunities might hide under the sea. However, Deep Sea Mining still poses major technical and environmental challenges.

Before these operations can be put at an economically relevant scale into practice, still a lot needs to be done on the front of research and development. What happens when the sea bottom is excavated or sea soil is removed? What are the impacts on the ecosystem and the environment?

The partners of TREASURE combine their expertise in the fields of microbiology, corrosion, material science, marine ecosystems and underwater pollution and noise to develop a framework for impact prediction, acceptance criteria and responsible Deep See Mining practices.
