Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semispina

This picture is taken during the peak of the diatom spring bloom of 2006. The many sparkling needles of the centric chain-forming diatom Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semispina (Bacillariophyceae) could even be seen with the naked eye. The other species in this picture can only be seen using a microscope.
