Guinardia striata

Hardly any nutrients remain available for algae growth after the spring bloom. Only species well adapted to these low resource conditions, such as the centric diatom Guinardia striata (Bacillariophyceae), will grow. The species forms open circular chains of cells by means of small eccentric spines at the end of each cell. One spine is just visible (not in focus) from the upper end cell of the left chain.
