Odontella sinensis

Several colorless bell-shaped ciliates (Vorticella, Protozoa) have attached themselves with a coiling stalk to the large diatom Odontella sinensis (Bacillariophyceae). Vorticella, the bacteria catchers of fresh and marine waters, make profit of the floating capacity of this large diatom and let themselves transport. In case they are not satisfied with the new environment, they release their carrier and try another substrate.
