Research

The reconstruction of past marine (and continental) climates by means of organic lipid biomarkers, since future climatic conditions can be better assessed if we have knowledge of past oceanic responses to climate perturbations. One of my main goals is the reconstruction of past seawater temperature variations, as this is an important boundary condition for identifying processes responsible for climate change. As part of my project, I mainly focus on long chain alkyl diols - lipid molecules produced by certain algae - which we can extract from seawater and marine sediments, and which can be used as indicators for past climatic conditions, such as sea surface temperature, upwelling intensity and terrigenous input into the marine realm.
