NO-REGRETS
Advancing integrated ecological and socio-economic knowledge to guide a sustainable offshore wind transition in the North Sea.
NO-REGRETS is a multidisciplinary research programme investigating how large-scale offshore wind farm expansion affects the North Sea ecosystem and economy. Combining field observations, experiments and modelling, the project studies impacts on currents, biodiversity, food webs and fisheries. Co-developed with stakeholders, it aims to provide knowledge and tools for sustainable marine spatial planning and balancing renewable energy with ecosystem health.

Project description
NO-REGRETS is an interdisciplinary research programme exploring how the rapid expansion of offshore wind farms will reshape the North Sea as a social-ecological system. As countries accelerate the transition to renewable energy, the North Sea is becoming a key site for large-scale offshore wind development. While essential for climate mitigation, this transformation introduces new pressures on marine ecosystems and existing economic activities, particularly fisheries.
The project adopts an integrated approach to understand how offshore wind infrastructure affects physical, ecological and socio-economic processes. It investigates changes in hydrodynamics, sediment transport and biogeochemical cycles, and how these influence primary production, plankton dynamics and marine food webs. Through a combination of field measurements, experimental research, remote sensing and modelling, NO-REGRETS examines impacts across multiple scales, from local wind farm sites to the wider North Sea.
A key focus is on how these environmental changes affect biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, including benthic communities, fish populations and top predators such as seabirds and marine mammals. The project also studies how artificial structures act as new habitats, potentially altering species composition and ecological interactions.
Beyond ecological impacts, NO-REGRETS addresses the socio-economic dimensions of offshore wind expansion. It evaluates trade-offs between energy production, fisheries and nature conservation, and examines how spatial competition and environmental change may affect different sectors. By integrating ecological and economic data, the project provides insights into ecosystem services and their value to society.
Stakeholder engagement is central to NO-REGRETS. Policymakers, industry and civil society are involved throughout the research process, ensuring that the knowledge generated is relevant and applicable. The project aims to support informed decision-making and marine spatial planning, contributing to a North Sea transition that balances renewable energy development with ecological sustainability and societal needs.
