Update 2 on the RV Wim Wolff incident

RV Wim Wolff sailing on the Wadden Sea
The damage to RV Wim Wolff following the incident on 31 July is extensive. Parts of the interior need to be removed and replaced. Further dismantling will clarify the extent of the repairs needed. A reliable date for the vessel’s return to service cannot yet be given.
The investigation found that a valve was unintentionally left open after use. Together with other technical and operational circumstances, this allowed the wastewater system to overflow. NIOZ is arranging repairs and preparing additional indicators to reduce similar risks.
The vessel’s absence affects the sailing programme. NIOZ is working on alternatives for affected research cruises and the researchers and partners concerned will be contacted directly about decisions affecting their projects.
