Vlieggedrag van grote meeuwen en visdief in Windpark Maasvlakte 2
Flight behaviour of seabirds in wind farms
This research project studies how lesser black-backed gulls, herring gulls, and common terns navigate around Offshore Wind Park Maasvlakte 2. Running from 2024 to 2027, the project uses high-resolution GPS tracking to map where these birds forage and how their flight behaviour changes near wind turbines, down to the scale of individual rotor blades. By combining tracking data with breeding success measurements and radar observations, the project aims to improve understanding of collision risk and help fine-tune turbine shutdown measures that reduce bird mortality, while contributing fundamental insights into seabird flight ecology.
