Special anniversary edition network round table: Monitoring the Future

Throughout our 150th anniversary year we’re organizing several activities. One of these activities is a series of round tables. We aim to engage in dialogue with a small group of guests about topics that contribute to our mission: sharing our knowledge to safeguard our future. In April, we invited about 40 guests from ministries, knowledge institutions and the business community to discuss monitoring the North Sea. We organized this initiative together with Naturalis Biodiversity Center.
Monitoring the North Sea
Pressure on the North Sea is mounting, space is becoming scarcer, and the need for reliable, shared biodiversity data is growing rapidly. The coming years will be decisive for how we use, manage, and protect the North Sea. We see various opportunities: automation, AI, eDNA, and improved data links make it more realistic than ever to detect changes in biodiversity at an early stage and translate these insights into better policy, management, and investment decisions.

Sharing perspectives, refining a joint vision
Together with partners from policy, science, and practice we discussed the opportunity of a joint approach to accelerate and scale up biodiversity monitoring in the Dutch North Sea. Structural impact is only possible if parties with different areas of expertise collaborate and actively pursue North Sea ambitions.
The aim of this initiative is to unite stakeholders and interested parties in realizing our North Sea monitoring ambitions and explore ways to refine our joint vision for biodiversity monitoring. All guests shared their unique perspectives, contributing to an insightful conversation. We are looking forward to taking the next concrete step towards Monitoring the Future together.
