As we enter NIOZ’s 150th anniversary year, we are pleased to present the achievements of 2025 while offering a glimpse into the future. Over the past 150 years, NIOZ has advanced our understanding of how geology, life, chemistry, and physics interact within the ocean system. With 2025 marking a year of strong momentum and growing global attention to the oceans, we are more prepared than ever to contribute to the future.

A year full of innovation

The year 2025 was a year full of innovation. NIOZ-director Han Dolman: "The techniques have changed, from describing newfound species to the use of environmental DNA and development of novel biogeochemical markers, from taking samples from small ships to ocean going vessels and now the use of unmanned vessels..."

Looking back at 2025

In our 150th anniversary year we will continue to push the boundaries of knowledge of the marine environment, tell our stories and connect even better to our stakeholders.
