Fire on roof of NIOZ building Texel

In the night of 23 to 24 April, a fire occurred on the roof of the NIOZ building in Den Hoorn on Texel. The fire was quickly brought under control by the fire brigade. At the time of the incident, no staff were present in the building.

There is damage in the laboratories located right below the place of the fire. Based on current information, chemical substances in the labs are not affected by the fire.

The likely cause of the fire appears to be a ventilation or air conditioning unit on the roof. This is being investigated.

Part of the NIOZ staff is advised to work from home on Friday, because of water and smoke damage. Employees will be informed of further developments and the impact on their work via internal channels.
