Microbiology
Our research aims to determine how diverse marine microbes are and their activity, from eukaryotes and prokaryotes to viruses, across ecosystems ranging from tropical waters to polar seas.

We investigate how human pressures, such as plastic pollution, chemical contaminants, and nutrient overload, affect microbial communities. By uncovering how microbes adapt to these challenges, we can better understand the ripple effects on entire marine ecosystems.
Microbes also play a central role in climate change: some produce greenhouse gases, while others help remove them from the atmosphere. By studying these processes, we reveal how the ocean’s smallest inhabitants both contribute to and help counteract global warming.
