Paul Berghuis

I am a PhD candidate in the project Builders on the Beach, a collaboration between Utrecht University and NIOZ. Together with a multidisciplinary supervisory team, I investigate how vegetated dunes develop along sandy coastlines. By combining remote sensing, field experiments, and mechanistic modelling, my research aims to improve our understanding of the establishment dynamics of coastal dunes. This knowledge can help inform new strategies for ecosystem restoration and conservation.

A central focus of my work is the role of spatial (self-)organization across multiple scales. More broadly, I am interested in spatial ecology and how spatial processes shape ecosystem development and resilience. Feel welcome to contact me with any questions or for further information.
