I study small demersal fish, such as gobies, flatfish and sandeel. These species play an important role in the marine ecosystem and serve as a food source for, among others, seals, porpoises, seabirds and predatory fish. Yet, we still know relatively little about their distribution, partly because they have little direct commercial value and, due to their small size, are difficult to sample reliably. With the NIOZ Deep Digging Dredge (Triple-D), we can effectively sample these small fish, including buried sandeel. Using these data, I map their distribution and abundance and investigate how these change over time.
