I study abrupt changes in the Earth’s climate and environment using AI. Currently I develop deep learning methods that can identify catastrophic (irreversible) tipping points in the Earth system. I’m interested in detecting catastrophic transitions associated with oxygen-depletion in the ocean, as well as detecting tipping in the polar ice sheets and the AMOC (an ocean circulation that transports heat to Europe via the Gulf Stream). Better understanding the tipping behaviour of these systems is especially important in light of current climate change, as we continue to approach and cross critical Earth system boundaries.
