Dr. Henk de Haas

Acoustic Researcher/Data Scientist

Main interest and daily activities

Sea bed morphology and sedimentary processes in the marine environment (coast to deep sea) on short to long term time scales (tides to glacial-interglacial cycles and longer).

Advice and support (on shore and at sea) NIOZ and non-NIOZ scientists in the use of marine acoustic equipment (=equipment that uses sound) that is designed to determine the depth of the ocean (bathymetry) and subbottom sediment layering,  observe objects in the water column (like for instance fish, plankton and clouds of suspended sediments) and for underwater navigation (a bit like an `underwater GPS system'). Perform acoustic data processing and interpretation. Assist in organising and operating scientific cruises.

Current projects: EMODnet Bathymetry

Methane emission in the North Sea II
Methane escapes from the seabed of the North Sea in various places. Recent German research suggested that this mainly occurs in the vicinity of abandoned wells. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and its release into the sea and subsequent release…

Expedition Hotchpotch
During the last week the central theme in our work was sea level change, but this week has come to an end and it is time for a change of subject. And a change of people too. At 7 o’clock this morning Pelagia arrived at Texel. All the non-Pelagia crew…

North Sea Expedition 'Sea level rise'
About 12.000 years ago sea level was more 60m lower than today and large parts of the North Sea were dry land. In the following 4.000 years sea level rose more than 40m and the North Sea was formed. This story currently lies buried below the present…
