Research Interests

From a scientific point of view, the complexity of the ocean demands a "multidisciplinary" approach for understanding. I do share this view and the oceanographic projects I have contributed to reflect this: Frisian Front Project, Integrated North Sea Project, “PROcesses of Vertical Exchange in Shelf Seas”, Faeroe-Shetland Channel project “PROcesses above Continental Slopes”. However, the successful multidisciplinary project should be firmly based on the proper understanding of the relevant mono-disciplinary processes and on the communicative ability of the investigators beyond the borders of their disciplines.

Within the scientific discipline of physical oceanography my interest focuses on the dynamical effects of density variations, ranging from diapycnal turbulent mixing via modification of oscillatory currents to internal waves. Over the years my research has always been funded on the analysis of measurements obtained at sea, with emphasis on those from moored instruments. Slowly, my working area changed from shallow seas (North Sea, Scotian shelf) via the continental slope to deep seas (Mediterranean Sea) and ocean (Bay of Biscay, Canary Basin, Brazil Basin). Meanwhile, my interest changed from the dynamical impact of fronts and the modifications of barotropic currents by stratification to internal wave fluxes and interactions. Attempts to estimate internal wave band fluxes directly using ADCP and thermistor string continued in a somewhat exaggerated interest in the working of oceanographic instrumentation and the development of specialized instrumentation (NIOZ Thermistor String). This interest resulted in the measurement of very sharp fronts, shock-waves and their impact on sediment resuspension and plankton dynamics.

Thermistor String

 NIOZ High-sampling rate Thermistor String:

Internal wave - Turbulence data

 NIOZ Thermistor String

The ocean interior is constantly in motion due to "internal" waves that are supported by the stable vertical density stratification. These waves are much slower than waves at the surface. Their typical periods range between 10 minutes and 1 day. However, their vertical amplitudes are typically 10 m and can grow over 100 m!

Using new detailed deep-ocean measurements we can show constantly varying but fairly smooth internal waves (video 1 & 2).

 Video 1

These data are from the open ocean Canary Basin (North-Atlantic Ocean) between 1390 and 1520 m. Video 1 (above) contains 3 panels: 24 hours span, 8 hours and 2 h 40 min. Video 2 (below) is the middle panel.

 Video 2

Great Meteor Seamount

Similar measurements at 550 m near the top of an underwater volcano, Great Meteor Seamount, in the same area show large breaking waves up to 50 m above the bottom and passing within a minute (video 3 below).

Video 3

These waves are so turbulent that they sweep up sediment 1000 times better than tidal currents in the area. Also, very small-scale turbulence is seen throughout the rest of the wave period.

The above data are collected using a novel set of 110 independent temperature sensors developed at NIOZ. Together these sensors constitute "NIOZ3", the first stand-alone-sensors successor of cabled NIOZ thermistor strings NIOZ1 and NIOZ2. In contrast with the former models, NIOZ3 has no cables between the sensors and communicates via an inductive link with a programming and synchronizing device. It can measure 1.5 years at a rate of 1 Hz and still resolve temperature better than 0.0001°C.

The knowledge of NIOZ3 has been improved to a smaller size NIOZ4 sensor, which runs on a single AA battery for the same duration of time. Its 2012 version has full compass and tilt sensor capabilities. The performance of these sensors is similar to that of NIOZ3, see large breaking waves observed above a methane seep site around 900 m depth off New Zealand.

The above image and videos are all from 1D (vertical) arrays, but internal wave - turbulence developments are essentially 3D. A first attempt to launch a 3D single-go mooring array will be made in November 2012. This NIOZ-development consists of 5 mooring lines, 100 m and will hold 515 thermistors. It will be transported in compact (folded) form, to be unfolded overboard just prior to deployment (see below).
