Publications: Refereed / PhD thesis / Reports
Geology, mainly marine sedimentological processes. The study of recent as well as past sedimentary processes at the sea floor from the coast, across the shelf seas and the continental margins to the deep ocean.
Within NIOZ I am responsible for the seismic equipment (including the recording container), the EM302 multibeam echo sounder installed onboard our research vessel Pelagia, the 3.5 kHz penetrating echosounder (also on the Pelagia) and the HiPAP100 USBL underwater navigation equipment on the same ship. My task is to help other users (coming from within and outside NIOZ) by giving advice, operate the equipment and process data if needed. I am also, in cooperation with the manufacturer Avaatech, a member of the XRF core scanner support team.
Study geology at Utrecht University, The Netherlands
Major topic: Sedimentology with research projects on tidal systems (sediment transport and dynamics of tidal channels in the Dutch Waddensea), and fluvial architecture (Neogene deposits in the Spanish Pyrenees and Central Spain). Minor topic: Economic Geology
Assistant Scientist at Utrecht University.
Research topics: tidal systems and fluvial architecture.
Ph.D. student at the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research.
Title of Ph.D. thesis: Transport, preservation and accumulation of organic carbon in the North Sea.
Post doc at NIOZ, followed by a permanent position (since 2010).
From 1997 onwards I have worked on various projects:
ENAM (European North Atlantic Margin): A study on quantification and modeling of sediment pathways and large-scale sedimentary processes on the European North Atlantic continental margin.
GEOMOUND, ECOMOUND and ACES: Three projects studying the cold water corals and related carbonate mounds present on the European continental margins.
STRATAGEM (Stratigraphy of the Glaciated European margin): A project dedicated to the study of the Neogene evolution and stratigraphical development of the European continental margin from Ireland to Norway.
MOUNDFORCE: The major objective of this project was to establish the geological, biological, oceanographical and chemical forcing conditions of cold water coral carbonate mound formation and to test the hypothesis of a possible linkage between (hydrocarbon related) cold seeps and the development of carbonate mounds, cold water benthic communities and authigenic carbonate formation.
NORTH SEA MONITORING: This program, involving several NIOZ departments, includes a yearly cruise to the North Sea during which various samples are taken at fixed stations for biological and geological studies. This is a long term study of the North Sea with the aim to detect whether any changes in the North Sea system do occur, and if yes why this is the case. Within this program I study the seepage of methane near the south eastern tip of Dogger Bank.
In addition to the projects mentioned above I have, by participating in various cruises to the North Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean and Indonesian coastal waters, contributed to many other projects as well.

Sound of Seismics: The first bang you will hear is the initial sound made by the airguns. After a while you will hear a second bang. This is the reflection of the sound at the seabed. This is immediately followed by a rumbling noise. This is the sound reflected by the succesion of sedimentary layers.
