The water in the Alboran Sea is thus full of particles and small swimmers that the sight is limited to about 5 m, also 900 m deep. This limits the underwater videos and also the robot-submarine (ROV)!

When the KM3NeT will be built, the optical modules will be lowered once to the sea-bottom where they will stay for at least 15 years. However, during the Pelagia-test-cruise they stay at the bottom for a few hours or a day.

KM3NeT, a European deep-sea research infrastructure, will host a neutrino telescope (NeT) with a volume of at least one cubic kilometer (KM3) at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea that will open a new window on the Universe.

It is Saturday, day one of our way back. Which, due to rather bad weather conditions, turned out to be a bit more than a two day journey. Wind force 8/9, 6 meter high waves and a staggering speed of around 5 knots (even down to 2 knots): Texel, here we come!

Today, the scientists are processing the last samples, which in my case means filtering until the sun says goodnight. I can remember when I trialed and errored on folding my first filter, while holding one tweezer in each shaking hand.

The distinction between early spring and late winter is blurry when you step out on deck for the morning CTD’s to find snow swirling in your face. Despite the winter conditions, we are starting to see life, in the planktonic sense, at our stations.
