Op 14 Mei vertrok de RV Pelagia uit Lissabon voor de eerste leg van de MedBlack GEOTRACES cruise. Het doel van deze tocht is om de distributie van een groot aantal spoor metalen en allerhande exotische isotopen in kaart te brengen in het zuiden van de Middellandse Zee.
It's the last day of the last CHARLET cruise. Time to finish the last experiments and start packing and cleaning to leave the Pelagia in a good condition.
Today, the second of May 2013, the last CTD of the Charlet-4 cruise has been brought up from great depths to reveal its secrets to us.
Diatoms are single-celled but can form long chains, which has been shown to reduce the grazing pressure, although some grazers like the larger sized diatom structure that is the result of chain formation.
Queens day 2013! In between our daily scientific work on board of the Pelagia, we had time to watch the festivities and even celebrate a little. It was a beautiful day with all the nice images from Amsterdam.
Changed has also the weather. In the first 3 days the sea was so calm that one could think we haven’t even left the harbor yet. So, no more loss of water while pouring and thus no more filling of the container with seawater.
They say that necessecity is the mother of invention, I’d probably say back pain is a better motivator. As the CHARLET cruises progessed, so did my questions about the factors affecting the growth of phytoplankton along our transect.
