ShamrockGreen for St. Patrick's Day ?

… Unfortunately not in the North Sea. The fluorescence values, the indicator for measuring the abundance of chlorophyll used by marine scientists, were very low for this time of year. The Spring Bloom certainly hasn't kicked off yet but we hope for an increase in sunshine over the coming days to give it a kick start.

That doesn't mean to say that St. Patrick's Day wasn't acknowledged. Rick, the chef had prepared a beautiful cake, decorated with chocolate shamrocks and kiwi slices to complete the emerald look. The crew, having gathered for morning coffee waited patiently for me to complete my experiment so that I would have the honour of cutting the cake, and quiet an honour it was too!

I managed to save a slice for my lab mate who was very accommodating with allowing for a day of Irish music as we prepared our experiments. A wide variety of genres filled the lab container from Sharon Shannon to Thin Lizzy and Van Morrison to Jape. It was good to hear the sweet sweet songs of home :-)

And in the evening we had a drink to celebrate this day!
