64PE365 - Dag 6

11/03/2013 23:00

Today, the measurements continue, but there has been a slight change of plans. Meinard, the chief scientist, decided to stay along the same transect instead of moving to the next one further east. The measurements were carried out going back and forth between three different stations along a North-South line.

The weather has being playing with our feelings. The 5:00 am shift woke up to a blizzard (snow, -1ºC, and force 8-9 winds), but a couple of hours later we were able to witness the first sunrise and bits of blue sky since the first day of measurements. This certainly lifted our hearts up in this difficult shift. However, the joy did not last long as we would again encounter the blizzard every single time we would sail back to the station furthest North.

(Note: it is said that last night the weather was also very rough. I cannot confirm this since I was sound asleep).

Food deserves a special place on this diary. So far only frikandel have been mentioned, but truth be told, we get spoiled with lots of good food. A good warm lunch at noon definitely keeps us going after 7 hours of work.

As a conclusion of the day: the change of plans seems to have paid off. Preliminary results show that with today's measurements, we were able to measure across the whole plume!

Tomorrow: we start a bit later since we have to reach our new transect.
