NIOZ Research
The four basic disciplines of oceanography at NIOZ are physics, chemistry, biology and geology. Multidisciplinary interdepartmental co-operation is regarded as one of the main strengths of NIOZ. Therefore, the research is organised in five multi-disciplinary themes, carried out by five scientific departments at Texel and four working groups in Yerseke.
The emphasis of NIOZ' research is on innovative and independent fundamental research in shallow coastal seas as well as in open oceans. The institute also carries out research to answer specific questions from society, policy and industry when this merges well with its fundamental work. Currently, NIOZ-harbour is restructured to accommodate various projects in collaboration with commercial partners on a sustainable exploitation of the sea.
Het NIOZ is een fundamenteel onderzoeksinstituut. Dat betekent dat we in beginsel willen weten hoe de zee functioneert. En met de zee bedoelen we dan de open oceaan, de kustzeeën, de getijdegebieden, estuaria en de overgangen naar het land. We willen weten welke processen er spelen, hoe deze processen worden aangestuurd en hoe het samenspel van deze processen resulteert in de fysische, chemische en biologische samenstelling van de zee, nu en in het geologisch verleden. Door deze processen op juiste wijze te beschrijven in wiskundige modellen, kunnen we inzichtelijk maken hoe veranderingen zich voltrekken, natuurlijk danwel als gevolg van menselijk handelen. Als onze modellen in staat zijn om de actuele situatie goed weer te geven, kunnen we ook met enig vertrouwen terug- en vooruitkijken.
