Project

In November 2007 I started my PhD study at Royal NIOZ, within the department of Biological Oceanography. My project is part of a high profile biological and oceanographic study of the effects of climate change on the oceans. The goal of this research is to study the effects of trace metal limitation (iron and zinc), light availability and the effects of different CO2 concentrations on the algae. The emphasis of this project will be placed on Antarctic micro-algal species, such as Proboscia alata and Chaetoceros brevis, but temperate or sub-polar species, such as Emiliania huxleyi and Proboscia indica, will also be studied.

My experimental work consists of culturing the algae in semi-continuous cultures, but also and mainly monitoring the experimental conditions. In order to monitor the cultures samples will be taken and processed in order to be analyzed later in time.
