A calm day at sea: blue skies, some clouds, hardly any wind. All the sampling and clearing of freezers is completed and the geophysical equipment is out and running smoothly. Finally the last people have recovered from Christmas and are out working in the lovely sunshine. Some are hammering away, making sure that no one can sit inside the labs for too long. Sander Asjes has been the bell-boy for the day, literally, giving the Pelagia Bell a good polish - it looks almost new now and can proudly shine in the coming sunset. Others enjoy their coffee break in a sunny spot on deck, sipping away healthy green tea.

The scientists sit bravely inside the lab, monitoring the geophysical equipment, not an easy job when there is such lovely weather outside. However, the exciting crossings of the canyon during the night make up easily for this - it is a very spectacular site. However, that was during the night and the day is a lot calmer, having a route to the west of the canyon.

An interesting thought appears though about the "feelings" of the instruments. During the last hours of yesterday and during the night, the "Sparker" did play up a bit and kept on missing triggers - running better only when Tim Henstock's attention was assured. Maybe this aspect should be monitored in more detail in the future - do instruments have a preferred person? I think this is a perfect question open for discussion when sitting outside and watching the sun set over the ever so blue Arabian Sea!
