About:

Education:

PhD at GEOMAR Research Center at CAU-Kiel, Germany (1998)

Diplom in Geology and Palaeontology at TU Braunschweig, Germany (1995)

Professional Appointments:

·         Jan 2010        Interim Head of Department Marine Geology

·         May 2009       Guest Professor at Ghent University (May 2009 – April 2012)

·         Oct. 2008       Senior Scientist at NIOZ (Oct. 2008 – present)

·         2005-2007      Marie Curie Fellow at GNS-Science (New Zealand) and RCMG (Belgium)

·         2002-2005      Research Scientist at IFM-GEOMAR, Germany

·         1998-2002      Post-Doc at IFM-GEOMAR, Germany

·         1995-1998      PhD at GEOMAR, Germany

Research Interests:

I study cold seeps around the world with a special interest in:

·         the petrography, isotopic composition (13C, 18O) and formation of methane-derived carbonates

·         hydro-acoustic detection and mapping of bubbles in the water column (Flare Imaging)

·         hydro-acoustic monitoring and quantification of bubble release from seeps with lander systems (GasQuant)

·         dissolved methane distribution and fate of methane in the water column

·         methane fluxes from the sea surface into the atmosphere

·         Multibeam mapping and backscatter analyses

·         Data integration and visualization in 3D

·         I am also programming GIS software for navigating ROVs or other towed devices over the seafloor for detailed deployment or habitat mapping (http://ofop.texel.com )

I do/did this e.g. in the Sea of Okhotsk, offshore Oregon at Hydrate Ridge, in the Black Sea, offshore New Zealand and nowadays also in the Arctic (offshore Svalbard and Alaska)

Current research & projects:

Current research involves the planning of studying methane release form gas hydrates, permafrost and melting sediment in the Arctic shelves. The actual release sites will be most likely quite similar to other seeps around the globe but the climate impact of seeps in shallow water of the Arctic shelves will be much higher than from deeper sites. With increasing water temperature the permafrost melting, gas hydrate decomposition and thus methane release will accelerate.

My current research projects at NIOZ are:

·                EMSO PP (EU FP7; leader at NIOZ, member of steering committee) http://www.emso-eu.org/

·                PERGAMON (ESF-COST Action; Chair: www.cost-pergamon.eu)

·                SO214 Cruise NEMESYS: Seep Studies offshore New Zealand

Past projects:

In the past I was involved in several projects dealing with cold, methane-dominated seepage around the world:

·                ESONET NoE (EU FP6; leader at NIOZ, member of steering committee) http://wwz.ifremer.fr/esonet_emso

·                MODOO (EU FP6, part of ESONET NoE; leader of WP1)

·               NEW VENTS, international project to study seeps offshore New Zealand, funded by Germany & EU (Marie Curie Fellowship) http://www.ifm-geomar.de/index.php?id=2558&L=1

·               CRIMEA, EU funded project to study high intensity seeps in the Black Sea (FP5) http://www.crimea-info.org/

·               COMET, successor of LOTUS (BMBF) http://www.ifm-geomar.de/index.php?id=1252&L=1
