The Data Management Group has prepared a number of
guidelines for onboard data management, specifically onboard RV Pelagia. These
guidelines can be downloaded from this page:
Note: download
the files by right_clicking on the link and select “Save Target As..” from the resulting popup menu.
Datamanagement_vaartochten.doc
General document describing
demands and procedures for onboard data management (Dutch version only).
Cruise Summary
The Cruise Summary gives an
overview of all onboard activities and is an important tool for data archival
and accessibility.
The DMG prepares a dedicated
database to be used by the Logboek software for all cruises with RV Pelagia.
The officers on the bridge of the Pelagia enter the information into the
Logboek database, in close cooperation with the chief scientist.
For cruises onboard other
ships a Cruise Summary in the form of an Excel sheet has been designed.
The Cruise Summary Excel
sheet and the accompanying manual in Word format (Dutch version only) can be
downloaded from this page.
All
oceanographic cruises are reported to the International Council for the
Exploration of the Seas with a ROSCOP form. The Data Management Group can
create and deliver these forms, but we also provide the chief-scientists of the
expeditions with an online ROSCOP web form, which contains several user
friendly features. Please ask the Data Management Group the access code to
create your personal forms.

Description of duties and
responsibilities of a data manager
aboard a research vessel (Dutch version only).
Variables underway system
Onboard RV Pelagia
continuous ‘underway measurements’ are carried out. Every 10 seconds
navigational, sea-surface and meteorological measurements are carried out.
Every minute one of these values is written to an Excel file. This Excel file
is directly accessible onboard.
The Variabelen_onderweg_systeem.doc
file describes these measurements.
True wind calculation
The wind measurements in the
Excel file give values relative to the ship and are not corrected for the speed
of the ship. The True_wind_calculation.xls file gives a step-to-step
calculation of the true windspeed and windvelocity in the columns W to AC
inclusive, following the method developed within the WOCE project.
By copying the cells W1 to
AC2 (including the formulae) to the original file and by using Fill down to
carry out the calculation for the other cells, the true wind can be calculated.
This calculation does not
reduce the windspeed to the 10 meters standard height. It remains the windspeed
at a height of 27 meter above the sea surface.
ICES Working Group on Marine Data Management
The ICES Working Group on
Marine Data Management (WGMDM) provides a forum for the exchange of expertise
and ideas for those involved in marine data management in ICES Member
Countries, and the provision of advice to the ICES Secretariat, in particular
to the Oceanography Secretary.
The WGMDM has designed a
series of Data Type Guidelines to describe the elements of data and metadata
important to the ocean research community. These guidelines are targeted toward
physical-chemical-biological data types collected on oceanographic research
vessel cruises. Each guideline addresses the data and metadata requirements of
a specific data type.
