The Department of Physical Oceanography aims at the study of ocean dynamics on a large range of spatial and temporal scales, and with a variety of techniques. The research methods cover dedicated research cruises, monitoring by means of moored instrument packages, remote sensing, instrumented commercial vessels, laboratory models, and analytical and numerical models. Presently, activities are organized under the following research themes:

Large scale ocean circulation

Tides and oceanic turbulence

Dynamics of coastal zones and shallow seas

Ocean

(LOCO)

Ferry & Jetty Observations

Internal

Management

Most of the studies are part of these departmental themes. Research from these themes regularly contributes to multi-disciplinary programmes, performed by different research programmes of the Royal NIOZ. Cooperation is established also with other Dutch oceanographic research groups as well as foreign institutions and international programmes.

Other activities like the development of the physical part of multidisciplinary models and the application of marine optics in oceanography, are mainly carried out in collaboration with other departments and/or institutes (and often made possible by the availability of external funds). Finally the Department of Physical Oceanography is in charge of continuous observations of oceanographic parameters in the Marsdiep inlet between Texel and Den Helder. Part of this time series already started in 1860.

Apart from the scientific activities the department supports national seagoing research programmes with hydrographic observations, satellite data and overall data-management. For these national tasks the Data Management Group acts as a separate group within the department Apart from the scientific activities the department supports national seagoing research programmes with hydrographic observations, satellite data and overall data management.
