Miscellaneous: Conservation law

After reviewing existing conservation laws, an extension is proposed consisting of the material conservation of the Jacobian of the velocity field. As its interpretation is as yet unclear, any input on this is welcomed. Its relation to the 'persistence of strain', a kinematic quantity, is discussed. The latter is also monitored with the aid of data obtained from drifter experiments at sea.
