From 1997 Patrick Laan works as a technician in the Biological Chemical Oceanography (BCO) group of the Biological Oceanography (BIO) department. After a 1 year studentship and a 1 year technician working period at the CO₂ group, he works at the trace metal laboratory now.

The main task of Patrick Laan is to measure trace metals (in particular iron) in seawater and develop new methods for the determination of trace metals. Also participation in research cruises for collecting and measuring trace metal samples in situ is part of his activities.

Methods used at Royal NIOZ:

- Determination of iron in open ocean seawater via flow injection chemiluminescence detection.

- Determination of various trace metals in sea- and coastal waters with GFAAS.

- Determination of transition- and trace metals via flow injection high resolution inductively coupled mass spectrometer (FI HR-ICP-MS).
