	22-24 november 2005	CARBOOCEAN Symposium kooldioxide opname in de Noordzee. (KNAW-Amsterdam)
Meer dan honderd toonaangevende Europese oceaanonderzoekers nemen deel aan een 3-daags symposium van 22-24 november bij de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) in Amsterdam. Onderwerp is de opname van kooldioxide (CO₂) door kustzeeën als de Noordzee en oceanen. Kooldioxide is de belangrijkste veroorzaker van de door de mens veroorzaakte verandering van het klimaat. Bovendien veroorzaakt de opname van steeds meer CO₂ een algemene verzuring van het zeewater, waardoor organismen zoals schelpdieren, koralen en vis steeds moeilijker hun kalkskeletten kunnen opbouwen. De Europese Unie financiert nu het grootste koolstofkringloop project op zee ooit: het Integrated Project CARBOOCEAN. Bijzonderheid is dat internationaal opererende bedrijven zoals de NAM en de Noorse rederij SEATRANS D.A. zeer actief bijdragen aan de metingen op zee. De Nederlandse tak van het project wordt gecoördineerd door Prof. Dr. Ir. Hein J.W. de Baar van het NIOZ.
	22-24 november 2005	CARBOOCEAN Symposium on carbon dioxide uptake in the North Sea. (KNAW–Amsterdam)
More than a hundred European scientists will participate in a three-day symposium at the Royal Netherlands Academy or Arts and Sciences (KNAW) from 22-24 November in Amsterdam. Subject is the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide by the North Sea. Carbon dioxide is the most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas causing changes in the world’s climate. Additionally, the uptake of more and more carbon dioxide by seawater will probably also lead to its acidification, hampering organisms like shellfish, corals and fish to build up their calcareous skeletons. The European Union now finances the largest carbon-cycle project ever: the integrated project CARBOOCEAN. Special is that two large internationally operating companies are actively contributing to the field measurements in the North Sea: the Netherlands Oil Company NAM and the Norwegian Shipping Company SEATRANS D.A. The Dutch branch of the project is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Ir. Hein J.W. de Baar of NIOZ.

Welcome to ECOLMAS, the European Graduate College in marine Sciences. ECOLMAS is the joint graduate school for marine sciences of the following organizations: EUROPROX European Graduate College Proxies in Earth History NEBROC Netherlands Bremen Oceanography Cooperation NSG Netherlands Research School for Sedimentary Geology RCOM Research Center Ocean Margins, University of Bremen (Germany) A joint curriculum related to marine sciences is offered to graduate students and scientists from the participating organizations and from other institutions associated with marine research and education. 	24 oktober 2005	NIOZ bijdragen aan de Wetenweek 2005: Lange termijn veranderingen in het Marsdiep
Om iedereen kennis te laten maken met de wetenschap wordt elk jaar in het hele land de ‘Wetenweek’ gehouden. De NIOZ bijdrage bestaat dit jaar uit een tweetal lezingen onder het thema ”Lange termijn veranderingen in het Marsdiep”. Het NIOZ voert al vele jaren metingen uit in het Marsdiep op de grens van Noordzee en Waddenzee. De resultaten geven bijzonder waardevolle inzichten in de reacties van het systeem op zowel natuurlijke als door de mens veroorzaakte veranderingen (o.a. klimaat, voedingsstoffen, Afsluitdijk). In een tweetal lezingen stellen wij u graag op de hoogte van onze meest aansprekende resultaten. - Variaties in temperatuur en zoutgehalte (Dr. Hendrik van Aken) - Variaties in intensiteit en soortsamenstelling van de algenbloeien (Dr. Katja Philippart & Jolanda van Iperen) De voordrachten zullen op maandag 24 oktober worden gehouden in de grote zaal van Hotel Den Burg, Emmalaan 4-6, 1791 AV Den Burg. 	13 & 14 oktober 2005	Noordzeedagen bij het NIOZ en Alterra-Texel…
Op 13 en 14 oktober 2005 vinden voor de 7^de keer de Noordzeedagen plaats, deze keer weer op bij het NIOZ en Alterra opTexel. Deze dagen worden georganiseerd om onderzoekers, beleidsmakers en gebruikers van de Noordzee dichter bij elkaar te brengen. 	20-22 April 2005	POGO News and Information meeting…
The Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) is an international network of major oceanographic institutions and their consortia. In has been established to promote and enhance the implementation and integration of global oceanographic activities. Directors of the member institutions meet regularly to review their programmes and to plan cooperative work. NIOZ is represented by Prof. Dr. Jan de Leeuw. 	17-21 April 2005	Fourth international Algal Virus Workshop (AVW4)
The main organizer of AVW4 is Dr. Corina Brussaard of our Biological Oceanography department; co-organizer is Dr. Herman Gons of the Centre for Limnology of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO). The workshop’s venue is “Het Trippenhuis” of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) at the Kloveniersburgwal 29. 	12 April 2005	Challenges in Marine Sciences 2005-2010…
On 12^th April, NWO-ALW, NIOO-KNAW/CEME and Royal NIOZ jointly organise the symposium ‘Challenges in Marine Sciences 2005-2010’ about the future of marine sciences in the Netherlands.
