I try to understand population ecology by looking at individual behaviour, with an emphasis on foraging. During my PhD at NIOZ/University of Groningen, I studied foraging decisions of red knots (Calidris canutus), aiming to reveal the ongoing evolutionary arms race between predators and their prey. In 2003, I became a post-doc at NIOO-KNAW, Nieuwersluis, in order to study large-scale movements of overwintering waterbirds (notably Bewick's swans Cygnus columbianus bewickii) and how these affect population parameters. After spending a year (2006) at Bristol University, UK, where I further improved my modelling skills, I returned to NIOZ, in order to study the mechanisms underlying the tremendous carrying capacity of Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania) for wintering waders.

Pervasive impact of avian migrant predators on intertidal communities may connect ecosystems on a global scale (VIDI, NWO).
