Research Interests

I am a marine ecologist with a strong interest in population dynamics. Key study system is the intertidal soft-sediment benthic community. One of my ultimate aims is to link population processes (renewal rate, mortality, migration) to the behaviour (e.g. interference behaviour of foraging animals) and physiology (dynamic energy budgets DEB) of interacting individual organisms. I nevertheless realize that populations do not occur in isolation and I try to have an open eye for community and ecosystem processes. Much emphasis is put on modelling, in which I favour the long and winding road of a reductionist approach, but now and then I have to apply a more statistical methodology (non-linear time series analysis, multivariate methods).

Projects

At present involved in six research projects:

(1) Population modelling of North Sea benthic fauna. Funded by BSIK. Supervisor of one Ph.D. student (Sofia Saraiva) and one PostDoc (Jan Drent)

(2) Secondary production in a nutrient-poor seagrass-dominated intertidal ecosystem, the Banc d’Arguin, Mauritania. Funded by WOTRO. In cooperation with Prof. dr. T. Piersma supervisor of one PhD student (Matthijs van der Geest)

(3) Predator avoidance strategies in bivalves and possible shifts in competitive power. Funded by NEBROC. Supervisor of one PhD (Henrike Andresen)

(4)Dynamic Energy Budgets (DEB) and inter-specific competition in filter-feeders. Supervisor of one PostDoc, Dr. Pieter Honkoop (NIOZ-NIOO cooperation)

(5) Spatial patterns in macrozoobenthos populations. In cooperation with Prof. dr. T. Piersma supervisor of one PhD Casper Kraan (Vogelbescherming, NIOZ, RuG)

(6) AquaDEB
