Een Dagboekgedicht We naderen de evenaar Voor een paar dreigt daar gevaar Voor hen die nooit de evenaar over konden. Heeft Neptunus al een bericht gezonden, Er is daarnaast nog veel te beleven, Daaruit zal ik wat weetjes zeven Josés verjaardag was één groot feest Je gelooft je ogen misschien niet, als je dit leest. Hij werd een echte Abraham, Niemand vermoedde dat hij al aan die leefdtijd kwam. In de machinekamer gaf hij een tour, En ik mocht stil staan bij elke bout en moer. Deze technische kathedraal, Staat vol met pracht en praal. Het stikt er van de opampjes, En duizenden controlelampjes. En van onze trouwe Kees, Kregen we uitleg over CTD’ ees. Maar nu een stukje over wetenschap, Want daarvoor zijn we toch op stap. Noemenswaardig is het feit, Dat alle verankeringen zijn binnengeleid. Het analyseren kan beginnen Want alle data is nu binnen. Hiervan lukte vijfentachtig procent, Dit resultaat is ongekend! Ook alle contactjes voor het seismieken, Zaten nu niet meer te zieken. De meting ging van een leien dakje, De oceaan leek wel een plat vlakje. Het CTD-en houdt niet op, Elke dag zinkt hij, blop blop blop, Hij gaat dan van bodem tot top, Zo halen we hem dan weer op. Drie verankeringen doen we morgen, We maken ons nog niet echt zorgen. Maar we varen niet zo snel. Dus misschien komen we met de tijd in de knel. Het voorwerk gaat door met volle kracht, Het komt wel goed, wordt hier gedacht. De thermistors zijn al aan de kabel geplakt, Dat moet ook wel voordat ie in het water wordt gekwakt. Gele tape was hiervoor essentieel, En dan is zestig meter heus niet veel. Nog steeds is het een nieuwe-dingen-festijn Niets anders dan dat is voor een groentje zo fijn. Nicolette

An update of the Adventures on the Pelagia In Dutch a poem was created in the spirit of 'Sinterklaas' to keep the loved ones up to date. Unfortunately my abilities to rhyme (even in Dutch) aren't that impressive. In English I don't dare to accept the 'translating-a-poem-challenge', so I will just put it in 'normal' words. Neptunes, the god of the seven seas has informed us, that he may visit us when we cross the equator, to 'welcome' the ones, who hasn't done that before. But we are not there yet and in the meantime a lot has happened. Sunday we had a party to celebrate Josés birthday. We danced all night long. The day after, still tired of the day before, it was Klaas' birthday. He turned 50. So another long night was spent in the messroom. Klaas gave me a private tour throughout all the technical rooms on board. Showing me the two engines, the electromotor, the pumps for all the cranes and much, much more. (A nice detail might be that most of the modern trains work just like this ship.) For us, the most inexperienced, the learning marathon proceeds. Kees explained to us what you have to do with data coming from the CTD. We also had lots of questions about the ADCP, we even e-mailed the manufacturer. All the moorings are back on board and 85 % percent has been successful. That is great news. Also the seismic-experiment of Louis is performing properly. At the moment we are trying to do a CTD every day, but the ship can't steam as fast as normal, due to a strong countercurrent. Today we skipped this to win some hours. Tomorrow we're going to deploy three moorings. Such a busy day is prepared thoroughly. One of the things we did today was attaching 100 thermistors to the cable. Every thermistor is attached one by one with yellow tape. (For the ones, who don't know what yellow tape is, I will explain. This tape is magical, it doesn't stick to anything but itself and it is incredible strong. 1.5 years at three kilometers depth is no problem for this super tape. It comes from Asia and must be one of the world wonders. On board it is used for everything!! This cruise would probably not be possible without it.) As a finishing touch of this update, I would like to tell that it is still a big science-festivity, with a bit of rain once or twice. Nicolette
