Brine CTD System

Goal

This CTD-system enables CTD-operations including water sampling in brines and mud-volcanoes. It is usually applied in the Mediterranean for geological research.

Description

The system consists of a SBE9plus underwaterunit, a SBE11plusV2 deckunit, a modified General Oceanic 24 position caroussel Model 1015, a SBE3plus thermometer, a special SBE4W wide-range conductivity sensor and a SBE5T underwaterpump. For sampling 15 Niskin watersamplers manufactured by General Oceanics are available. These 10-liter samplers are equipped with internal stainless steel springs. For bottomdetection a switch with a weight is installed. The SBE11+ has a NMEA interface for navigational data. On the logging computer Seasoft for Windows is installed (Seasave V7.20 and SBE Data Processing V7.20).

Remarks

The CTD frame is made of stainless steel. The CTD including the wide-range conductivity sensor is mounted on a bracket occupying a bottle position.

Detailed information about the sensors (e.g. accuracy) and other system modules are available via the links.
