McLane Moored Profiler

Goal

Acquiring long time series of high vertical resolution and high accuracy CTD-profiles.

Description

A McLane Moored Profiler (MMP) is an autonomous profiling CTD. It consists of streamlined housing with a controller, buoyancy, a drive motor, a FSI-CTD and a very large lithium battery. With guiding wheels and a motor driven friction wheel the profiler can be attached to a mooring line. With small ballast weights the effective density of the profiler can be tuned to the density of the water halfway of the column.

This minimises the amount of energy to move the profiler up and down. With one battery it is possible to obtain around 400 CTD profiles with a length of about 2500 meter.

Remarks

Since 2003 MMP’s are deployed in the Irminger Sea and “refreshed” once a year. The MMP’s showed to be very reliable and up to now a close to perfect time-serie of 1 CTD-profile per day during 6 years has been obtained. The 7-th year-round deployment is running now and the 8-th is planned.
