R/V Pelagia Cruise BIOSYS 2007

INTRODUCTION

Within the NWO funded project BIOSYS (Biology and Ecosystem Functioning of Deep Water Corals), scientists, students and technicians from the Netherlands, France, Sweden and Spain join in forces to investigate some cold water coral reefs of the Skagerrak. Main goals of the BIOSYS project is the study of growth and feeding behavior of cold water corals, as well as the role, abundance and diversity of microbial associations and the potential role of prokaryotes as surplus food or energy supply to the deep water coral bioherms. Two previous cruises within the BIOSYS project frame were already carried out in other regions of the North Atlantik: the Rockall Bank area (64PE238) and the Hebrides (64PE250). Data collected during the present cruise will thus be compared to these other deep water coral sites. All of BIOSYS activities took and take place in close cooperation with cold water coral scientists that are involved in the EU funded project HERMES. This year’s cruise will comprise extensive multibeam surveys, video transects, box coring to retrieve benthos samples and experiments with live corals will be carried out directly on board RV Pelagia.
