Long-Term Ocean Climate Observations (LOCO)

Within the LOCO project, moorings will be deployed in some key areas of the global ocean circulation. These are:

In addition to these ocean circulation measurements, two sets of four moorings each are used to study the spatial and temporal variability in the internal wave field. One set of moorings is deployed in the Canary Basin around 30° N. The other set of moorings is currently deployed in the Irminger Sea near 60° N.

The moorings will consist of current meters, ADCPs (Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers) for velocity profiles and sensors for measuring temperature and salinity. The moorings will be used to obtain long-term observations of the current field and transport of heat and fresh water in some key areas of the global ocean circulation and to perform studies on ocean interior mixing due to internal waves. In order to observe low-frequency variations these moorings are deployed for periods of at least 3 to 7 years, so that also variations due to the NAO and the El-Niņo cycle may be covered.
