R/V Pelagia Cruise HERMES

After a sleepless night with the kitchen pots klinging to the rocking sea, todays tasks of 3 boxcores and a 12 h CTD were not too demanding for most of us. We had the "perfect box core" for our project tasks with living coral and overlying seawater which allowed us to sample the coral's gastral fluid and tissue to check on the diversity and numbers of microorganisms and to compare them to the surrounding seawater. Also, Marc seemed very content with 2 good box cores from the shallow slope that provided material for several analyses and experiments.

After lunch the 12h deployment of the CTD jojo started and the fact, that Jenny, Furu along with the crew covered this time by taking shifts. This left the rest of us having a relaxed afternoon. However, for at least 2 of us, Danny from Italy and me from Germany, there was another exciting event: The worldcup matches of Germany against Argentina and Italy against Ukraine. Due to the CTD deployment, Pelagia was in the wrong position to watch the games via Satellite TV. Despite this lack, we soon got the results and since both our teams made it to the next round, we are now impatiently awaiting Tuesday night to watch Italy - Germany! Our ship, the RV Pelagia, will by then be heading towards Oban and we were assured that it will be possible to receive a satellite signal and to watch the game then. Well, we'll see what happens ...
