CV:

  • 1985-1991:

Study geology at Utrecht University, The Netherlands

Major topic: Sedimentology with research projects on tidal systems (sediment transport and dynamics of tidal channels in the Dutch Waddensea), and fluvial architecture (Neogene deposits in the Spanish Pyrenees and Central Spain). Minor topic: Economic Geology

  • 1991-1993:

Assistant Scientist at Utrecht University.

Research topics: tidal systems and fluvial architecture.

  • 1993-1997:

Ph.D. student at the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research.

Title of Ph.D. thesis: Transport, preservation and accumulation of organic carbon in the North Sea.

  • 1997-Present:

Post doc at NIOZ within various projects:

ENAM (European North Atlantic Margin): A study on quantification and modeling of sediment pathways and large-scale sedimentary processes on the European North Atlantic continental margin.

GEOMOUND, ECOMOUND and ACES: Three projects studying the cold water corals and related carbonate mounds present on the European continental margins.

STRATAGEM (Stratigraphy of the Glaciated European margin): A project dedicated to the study of the Neogene evolution and stratigraphical development of the European continental margin from Ireland to Norway.

MOUNDFORCE: The major objective of this project is to establish the geological, biological, oceanographical and chemical forcing conditions of carbonate mound formation and to test the hypothesis of a possible linkage between (hydrocarbon related) cold seeps and the development of carbonate mounds, cold water benthic communities and authigenic carbonate formation.

CARBONATE: Within this project we will drill through several cold-water coral carbonate mounds at the Irish Margin. This project aims to a) recover complete mound sequences through a range of carbonate mounds in different settings, b) elucidate the timing and factors controlling carbonate mound genesis, c) generate a mound development model for different environmental settings, d) estimate the influence of climate change in carbonate mound development, e) assess the role of cold-water coral carbonate mounds in the global carbon cycle, f) derive palaeoenvironmental signals from carbonate mound sequences.

Research interests:

  • Geology, mainly marine sedimentological processes. The study of recent as well as past sedimentary processes at the sea floor from the coast, across the shelf seas and the continental margins to the deep ocean.
  • Favourite tools: seismics (including the recording container) and multibeam echosounder.

Current research:

  • Recently I have started working on methane seeps (volume, variations in fluxes, importance of methane as a greenhouse gas) and want to develop acoustic tools to study these phenomena.
