HISTORIC FACTS ABOUT NIOZ

2003	The newly built and renovated buildings of Royal NIOZ are being opened officially by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix.
2001	NIOZ celebrates its 125th anniversary. On this occasion, the institute is granted the status “Royal”.
2001 \| 2000	Research vessel Pelagia carries out 2 expeditions Around Africa.
1997	The start of a close co-operation with the research institutes in Bremen (NEBROC).
1997	The experimental wader bird study unit is ready for research on seabirds.
1993	A formal contract is concluded between NIOZ and the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Sea research (AWI) concerning co-operation in CO₂ research in the Southern Ocean.
1993 \| 1992	With research vessel Tyro the Netherlands Indian Ocean Programme is executed.
1990	Research vessel Aurelia (32 meters) is replaced by the new vessel Pelagia (67 meters).
1984 \| 1983	Research vessel Tyro is sailing Indonesian waters for the Snellius-II expedition.
1976	The present-day building is ready for use.
1965	NIOZ moves to the island of Texel. Only the aquarium building is ready. The other departments of the institute are housed in a temporary building, the provisionary.
1928	Sea research is divided in marine biological research (performed at the Zoological Station in Den Helder) and fisheries research (performed at RIVO, the governmental institute for fisheries research in IJmuiden).
1890	The opening of a permanent building for sea research, the Zoological Station, in Den Helder.
1876	A mobile wooden field station becomes available for sea research.
1872	The Nederlands Dierkundige Vereniging (Netherlands Zoological Society) is founded.
