The newly built and renovated buildings of Royal NIOZ are being opened officially by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix.

NIOZ celebrates its 125th anniversary. On this occasion, the institute is granted the status “Royal”.

Research vessel Pelagia carries out 2 expeditions Around Africa.

The start of a close co-operation with the research institutes in Bremen (NEBROC).

The experimental wader bird study unit is ready for research on seabirds.

A formal contract is concluded between NIOZ and the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Sea research (AWI) concerning co-operation in CO2 research in the Southern Ocean.

With research vessel Tyro the Netherlands Indian Ocean Programme is executed.

Research vessel Tyro is sailing Indonesian waters for the Snellius-II expedition.

The present-day building is ready for use.

NIOZ moves to the island of Texel. Only the aquarium building is ready. The other departments of the institute are housed in a temporary building, the provisionary.

Sea research is divided in marine biological research (performed at the Zoological Station in Den Helder) and fisheries research (performed at RIVO, the governmental institute for fisheries research in IJmuiden).

The opening of a permanent building for sea research, the Zoological Station, in Den Helder.
