MISSIE

Het NIOZ Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Zeeonderzoek is het nationale oceanografische instituut van Nederland. Het NIOZ maakt deel uit van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO). Het NIOZ is gevestigd op Texel en ligt op de grens Noordzee en Waddenzee; twee belangrijke onderzoeksgebieden. Het instituut heeft ongeveer 220 mensen in dienst en het jaarbudget bedraagt ca. €20 miljoen. Missie: De missie van het NIOZ is het verkrijgen en communiceren van wetenschappelijke kennis van zeeën en oceanen voor een goed begrip en een duurzame toekomst van onze planeet. Tevens ondersteunt het instituut onderzoek en onderwijs in de mariene wetenschappen in Nederland en in Europa.
Taken: Om deze missie te vervullen, voert het NIOZ taken uit op drie gebieden: Onderzoek: De nadruk ligt op grensverleggend en onafhankelijk fundamenteel onderzoek in kustzeeën en open oceanen. Daarnaast voert het NIOZ voert ook onderzoek uit dat voortkomt uit maatschappelijke vragen, wanneer dit goed past bij het fundamentele werk. Onderwijs: Het instituut leidt onderzoekers in opleiding (OIO’s), master studenten en studenten aan het hoger en middelbaar beroepsonderwijs op. Samen met universiteiten organiseert het NIOZ ook cursussen voor OIO’s en master studenten in de oceanografische wetenschappen. Faciliteiten: Het NIOZ nodigt mariene onderzoekers van Nederlandse en buitenlandse universiteiten en instituten uit om onderzoeksvoorstellen te schrijven waarin de onderzoeksschepen, de laboratoria en de -vaak zelf ontwikkelde- gespecialiseerde onderzoeksapparatuur van het NIOZ worden ingezet. Organisatie: De vier basisdisciplines van de oceanografie bij het NIOZ zijn de natuurkunde, scheikunde, biologie en geologie. Multidisciplinair zeeonderzoek is één van de sterke punten kanten van het NIOZ.
MISSION

NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is the National Oceanographic Institute of the Netherlands. NIOZ is part of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The institute employs around 220 people and the annual budget is approximately €20 million. The mission of NIOZ is to gain and communicate scientific knowledge on seas and oceans for the understanding and sustainability of our planet. The institute also facilitates and supports marine research and education in the Netherlands and Europe. In order to fulfil its mission, the institute performs tasks in three specific fields:
Research: The emphasis is on innovative and independent fundamental research in continental seas and open oceans. The institute also carries out research based on societal questions when this merges well with its fundamental work. The senior scientists at NIOZ all participate in international research projects. Education: The institute educates PhD and other students of universities and schools for professional education. Together universities NIOZ also organises courses for PhD students and master students in the marine sciences. A number of our senior scientists is also appointed as professor at Dutch and foreign universities. Facilitary services: NIOZ invites marine scientists from Dutch and foreign institutes and universities to write scientific proposals involving the institute’s research vessels, laboratories, and the large research equipment, which is often designed and built by the institute’s own technical department. The basic oceanographic disciplines at NIOZ are physics, chemistry, biology and geology. Multidisciplinary research is regarded as one of the main strengths of the institute.
