Niskins for Hydrowire Applications

Goal	With a Niskin attached to a hydrographic wire and actuated by a messenger it is possible to sample water in a reliable and low-tech way.

Description	There are 5-, 8- and 10-liter Niskins available. The 8- and 10-liter Niskins are made of PVC and mounted on a anodised aluminium mounting bracket with release mechanism. The 5-liter Niskins have an integrated release mechanism made of PVC. The messengers are made of brass.

Remarks	It is possible to sample more then one depth by attaching more Niskins to the wire and loading each Niskin (except the deepest one) with a messenger to close the next Niskin, but this option is not applied very often. In most cases a single Niskin is attached to a hydrographic wire to sample water from a small ship or a Zodiac.
