My work generally concentrates on studies on the population densities of benthic species in the Dutch sector of the North Sea and on factors which affect these densities. Within the department MEE we have worked for 15 year on a monitoring programme concerning North Sea benthos. In other programmes I studied the effects of various kinds of environmental disturbance on population densities of benthic organisms. A main topic were the discharges of drilling muds at offshore platforms. Particularly locations where in the eighties and early ninetees oil-based drilling muds were used and discharged received our attention. Particularly the long-term effects are still subject of interest, since measurable effects of the former discharges were found even after 20 years . Other effect studies concerned the discharges of harbour sludge  off the Zuid-Holland coast and currently the effects of the construction of the Offshore Windfarm near Egmond aan Zee is subject of study. It is hypothesized that the ban on fisheries within this area could, at the longer term, have a positive effect on the population densities of the larger  long living benthic species.
