R/V Pelagia Cruise LOCO/IW 2009

Diary overview

Wednesday, 8 July

Recovered from last night's very pleasant BBQ I am writing this diary. I will introduce myself first. I am Jan Dirk de Visser (and not Dirk Jan as mentioned in an earlier diary message). I am a new technician at NIOZ, since 06 May. This is my first trip on the Pelagia. In the beginning, I had to get used to life on board, because everything is new to me. But luckily we work here with nice people, making adaptation a lot easier.

But no more about myself, as you want to read what we did during the last few days. We are still underway to the Canary Islands, so the number of scientific activities with overboard operations is limited. Our on board work is spread over the days. Last Sunday, Louis and Matthieu gave a presentation about some of their first findings from new observations. Amongst other things, they talked about plankton dynamics.

Meanwhile, Martin struggles with the reading of 200 mini SD cards from the NIOZ-thermistors. (Rather him than me). Marcel and I made a set of new hoisting slings for the lifting of the large buoys. And Edwin kept on testing the new CTD-water-bottles, which went to 500 m depth on Monday. This short stop was used by some of us to catch some fish. They tasted very good.

Yesterday, Edwin tested the CTD-bottles again, this time to 3000 m. They came on deck, still well under pressure, which is promising for the future. In the afternoon we prepared the deck for the BBQ.

Today is cleaning-up time and preparing the deck for the mooring recovery, because that is planned for tomorrow. Friday and Saturday are also mooring recovery days, with associated CTD-casts each day. And after that, it will be just a little bit of steaming towards Las Palmas.
