Large and International Projects

NIOZ cooperates with many other marine institutes and universities around the world in a number of international projects. The information on projects which NIOZ coordinates is given on the NIOZ web-site. For the projects of which are coordinated by our research partners, we provide a short introduction on the NIOZ web-site followed by a link to the project website.

MariculturePARC

The goal of MariculturePARC (Production And Research Centre) is to fill the gap between fundamental research on marine organisms (e.g. seaweeds, mussels, corals, salt tolerant vegetables, etc.) and full-scale production facilities. This will be done by setting up flexible pilot scale facilities to perform fundamental & applied research and obtain direct practical experience.

ZKO Waddenzee

Ballast water

The global transport of organisms via ships' ballast water is an important subject in studies of biodiversity. NIOZ is coordinating the EU-Interreg IVb project 'Ballast water opportunity' (2009-2013) for the North Sea Region. NIOZ is also a recognized test-site of the IMO for the land-based testing of the efficiency of organism removal by ballast water treatment installations designed to be used on board ships.
