Marine benthic invertebrates are sedentary as adults, while, in most species, the larvae drift in the water column for a few days or weeks. It is therefore generally assumed that the adult stocks are strongly connected through larval dispersal. However, this assumption is little substantiated because the tiny larvae are so hard to study in the field. This project aims to determine dispersal distance of common Wadden Sea bivalves by taking a threefold approach.

Chick murder on a Sunday

Why are gull chicks murdered especially on Sundays? How does man influence the size of gull populations? These and many other questions are answered in the doctoral thesis of Kees Camphuysen from the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research NIOZ. Camphuysen will defend his thesis at the University of Groningen on 21 June. For more info click here.

 DEB Symposium 2013 at NIOZ on Texel

from 24 to 26 April 2013 the NIOZ, the VU University Amsterdam and IMARES Wageningen UR organize the third international Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) symposium on Texel. During the symposium new theoretical developments as well as a broad variety of applications in, for example, physiological ecology, populatin ecology and eco-toxicology are presented and discussed. Chance of survival of young molluscs determined by their size

Even small differences in body size have a significant impact on the chances of survival of young molluscs. This is the conclusion Henrike Andresen draws in her PhD thesis. Henrike studied predation by crustaceans on bivalve molluscs during their early bottom-dwelling stage. She defended her thesis at the VU University Amsterdam on 8 January 2013.

1/1/13 Katja Philippart new board member 'Waddenacademie-KNAW'


Katja Philippart is a renowned scientist with excellent communication skills. She studied Biology at Wageningen University and received her doctorate in 1994 on ‘Eutropication as a possible cause of decline in the seagrass Zostera noltii of the Dutch Wadden Sea’, supervised by prof. dr. Wim Wolff. Katja (co-)authored numerous publications, especially on the functioning of the Wadden Sea, and currently is the PI and coordinator of two large interdisciplinary Wadden Sea projects, IN PLACE and WaLTER. Katja will provisionally be appointed until 1 july 2014.
