Through purchase, exchange subscriptions and donations, the library has evolved as a rich resource and a national documentation center, not just for marine biology, but also for oceanography, marine chemistry, marine geology and marine physics. In addition to recent acquisitions of books and journals, valuable ancient literature forms part of our collection. Notably the back issues of the Nature journal as a gift from Eugene Dubois (known as the discoverer of the "missing link" between ape and man in Java 1891), all 50 parts of the "Reports" of the Challenger expedition (1872-1876), received since our director P.P.C. Hoek collected barnacles during the expedition, as well as famous and richly illustrated books like Slabber's 'Natuurkundige Verlustigingen' (1796) and Rumphius' 'D'Amboinsche Curiosities RoomRariteitkamer' (1741). Such antiquarian books can obviously not be borrowed but may be consulted.
The collection consists of magazines, books, reports, theses and atlases.
At present, 70% of our current journals available electronically. This service only applies to employees of the NIOZ and is offered through NIOZ internal network.
