Prof. dr. Linda Amaral-Zettler

My research applies molecular biology (‘omics) and advanced imaging techniques to address broad questions in microbial oceanography. I am interested in relationships between organisms and the environment and the mechanisms that determine diversity, distribution, and function. A longstanding focus is “life on plastic” or the “plastisphere” and its role in biodegradation. I also investigate diversity, physiology, and population genetics of microalgae and brown macroalgae (e.g. Sargassum seaweeds), as well as their associated microbiomes. My research aims to understand how environmental factors and natural or anthropogenic changes contribute to ecosystem function and often approach questions from multiple directions and disciplines.
