NIOZ harbour, strategically located on the border of North and Wadden Sea, has long been the base for our sea-going research. There is a wide berth for the RV Pelagia, two jetties for the RV Navicula and RV Stern, a large shed and a yard for seagoing equipment. Since 2001, the NIOZ harbour is also home to a testing facility for ballast water treatment installations. Companies and ships can test here the effectiveness of their (prototype) equipment with respect to the criteria laid down in the ballast water treaty of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The facilities, easy access to natural seawater and the proximity of the NIOZ as a center for marine science, render this location an attractive one for innovative (starting) companies who want to make sustainable use of the marine environment. Cooperation with the NIOZ means a cost reduction in R & D and in infrastructure investments and lowers the threshold for new initiatives.
NIOZ has developed plans for improving and expanding the existing infrastructure and has acquired the necessary subsidies. On March 1, a declaration of intent has been signed with the Municipality of Texel, the Development Corporation of 'Noord Holland Noord' and Akroconsult to further the development of 'NIOZ Science' harbour.
